The Only One

Prologue


He whimpered as he rolled the cruelly injured body over, the action revealing blue eyes glazed over in death. Squatting close to the fire-twisted limbs, he gently brushed flakes of blackened skin from slack lips, and then impulsively bent to place a kiss of benediction and farewell on the first person he'd encountered since his landing. He surged to his feet at distant cries of distress and, after a final lingering glance, he ran towards his future.

Hissing as the silk brushed against his tender flesh, he reflected that burning to death ranked high on the pain scale, probably the most unpleasant method of expiring...except perhaps for that time he'd been accused of being a witch and was 'pressed' to confess. After attempting to buckle his belt and failing, he abandoned the effort until the new skin had a chance to toughen and decided to drive back to Metropolis barefoot. This slice of Hell disguised by cornstalks was not where he wanted to be. He'd never enjoyed the feeling of vulnerability that would hang over him until he'd healed enough to be able to defend himself from attack.

Sliding gingerly behind the wheel, he checked the rearview mirror for traffic, only to stop short at his reflection. Running his palm carefully over his head, he frowned, puzzled at the complete absence of hair. Looking over his shoulder at the devastated field where he'd woken up screaming within a mass of charred flesh, he assessed the possibilities before driving away.
